    use of dash

    I wonder when to use a dash. For supplementary explanation or emphasis? If someone could provide a good material or link for punctuation or a brief explanation here, it would be highly appreciated.

    ex)The McDonald's restaurants that are located across the United States - and increasingly, the world - have a significance that goes far beyond the convenience of quick hamburgers, milk shakes, and salads...

    I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
