    Article - the

Which one of the following is correct?

    1. Mitt Romney was governor of liberal Massachusetts.
    2. Mitt Romney was the governor of liberal Massachusetts.

It sounds to me that both are acceptable. What do you think?

    Thanks!

    Re: Article - the

    Hi,

I would personally choose #2 because, as far as I know, there's only one governor in each state. Therefore, only one person can hold the office at a given time.

I am not sure what you meant. Do you mean if there are two governors in each state then paragraph 1 will be correct?

If there were two (or more) Governors, you would use "a Governor" or "one of the Governors":

Mitt Romney was a Governor of liberal Massachussets.
Mitt Romney was one of the Governors of liberal Massachussets.

If you wanted to use "the" in this context, you should then be a bit more specific about his tasks:

Mitt Romney was the Governor of liberal Massachussets who approved the Medicare reform.
