    At one point the fort was attacked in the dead of night and the legion was all but wiped out, saved only by a messenger who managed to call for reinforcements.

    Does the above sentence mean the legion was nearly wiped out?

    Yes. "All but" in this context means "very nearly".
    Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.
