are the sectence patterns OK or not

    Hello, everyone.
I am not sure the following sentences I worte are right or not, especially the highlighten parts.
    (1) Two periods are selected to study... The first, in August 2011, students were taken to......; and the second, in May 2012, students were asked to...
    (2) For simplicity, the period in August 2011 is abbreviated to 'Period 1' and the period in May 2012 is abbreviated to 'Period 2'.

    Any help will be appreciated.

I don't know about anyone else but I can't answer your question without knowing what all the missing text is. At the moment, they are just fragments of a longer text. There are no full sentences to consider or to correct.
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

    Thank you for your reply.
I just want to make sure is there any problems with the fragments.
Because someone told me that it is not right to say 'the first, in 2011'. It is better to say 'the first period, in 2001'

Impossible to say without context and without the rest of the text.
