    Tigers are not... are/aren't they?

"Tigers are not the largest predatory cats in the world, are / aren't they?"

I believe 'are' is the correct choice, but one of my friends says that it should be 'aren't'. because of 'are not' in the first part of the question. She claims that if 'are not' were replaced by 'aren't', then 'are' is right. Is she correct?

    Thanks.

You are right and your friend is wrong. It makes no difference whether you use "are not" or "aren't" - they mean exactly the same thing. With these type of tag questions, you use the opposite in the tag to the form you used in the main body.

Tigers are not the largest cats, are they?
I am not your best friend, am I?
People here aren't very nice, are they?
We're not going to the cinema tonight, are we?

We're going to the cinema tonight, aren't we?
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

Change the polarity in a tag. If you don't, it's sometimes possible, but it's not a tag:

'So "Lions aren't the largest predatory cats in the world"... aren't they?'. This is a sarcastic rhetorical question about a mistaken belief (and so rare that I probably shouldn't have mentioned it at all )
