    'Thanks to the presence of a smoke detector the fire was discovered and dealt with in time.'
    If...
    Should it be:
    'If there hadn't been a smoke detector the fire wouldn't have been discovered and dealt with in time.' OR
    'If there weren't a smoke detector the fire wouldn't have been discovered and dealt with in time.'

    The first version is more natural but I can't say the second is wrong.
