in which( or where ) problem

    Dear teachers,

I was told many times by teachers that where ( or, in formal writing, in which ) follows a place in relative clause
Grammar Girl : "Where" Versus "In Which" :: Quick and Dirty Tips

    How about this :

......speech in which she invoked the future .....

Speech is not a place or building

Michelle Obama electrified Democrats on the opening night of the party's national convention with a powerful and unashamedly personal speech in which she invoked the future of her own children as she made the personal and political case for her husband's re-election.

Michelle Obama makes the political and personal case for four more years | World news | guardian.co.uk

    Thanks

    This is perfectly correct.

Thanks a lot for you reply

How about which instead of in which ?

Michelle Obama electrified Democrats on the opening night of the party's national convention with a powerful and unashamedly personal speech which she invoked the future of her own children as she made the personal and political case for her husband's re-election.

    NOT A TEACHER

Why do you want to leave out "in"? She invoked the future of her own children in her personal speech. The original sentence is fine as it is.
