    usefulness of the sun

In a composition about the usefulness of the sun, if a student writes "The sun is very useful. It makes the flowers grow.", is it grammatically accceptable to put the definite article before "flowers" or must it be removed?

    Thanks

The definite article is not obligatory. I hope your student understands that it requires much more than the sun to make flowers grow. It would have been better as "It helps flowers grow". Remember to point out to your student that he/she needs to put a space after a full stop, which was missing in the original.
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.
