lower the quality of an essay

Can I use' lower' in the following sentence? Also, if you see any problems, can you correct them?

Basic errors of grammar can lower the quality of an academic essay and makes the essay incomplete.

Maybe, not being a native speaker, I missed something, but it's a beginning, at least.

Basic errors (plural noun) of grammar can lower (OK, but "reduce" would be a suitable alternative) the quality of an academic essay and makes make (plural verb form with plural noun, "errors") the essay incomplete.
