You cannot/ can not only eat delicious food for free but also make foreign friends.

    1. You cannot only eat delicious food for free but also make foreign friends.

    2. You can not only eat delicious food for free but also make foreign friends.

Sentence 2 is from my grammar book and I became wondered if we can write like 1

since we don't split 'can' and 'not' in writing.

    Please enlighten me.

OED has a nice little explanation of this (and an example very similar to yours).

And a sentence like that is a great example of one that should be rewritten. Not only can you...
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
