can a person be a finacial success?

"Sometimes, after a husband died,a woman might go to work and be more a financial success than her man had been."

1)Would it be better to use something like "more financially secure" or "financially successful" for "more a financial success"?
2)Could I write "after the husband died, the woman would go to work"? Or "...after husbands died, women would..."?

The original would be OK with "more of a financial success", it would also work with your two suggestions.
If you use "would" instead of "might" it changes the meaning.

Thanks for advice regarding the change in meaning! With "would" in it, would it mean something like "When the husband died, the woman would go (=went) to work"?
