    dictating machine

Did this "dictating machine" fuction only as a type-dictating or playback? Why did Edison think it had no future?

ex)There is no denying the importance of the future. Charles. F. Kettering said, "We should be concerned about the future because we will have to spend the rest of our lives there." However, important or not, the future isn't easy to predict.
In 1877, when Thomas Edison invented the phonograph, he thought of it as an office dictating machine and lost interest in it. When the Wright brothers offered their invention to the U.S. government and the British Royal Navy, they were told airplanes had no future in the military...

    Re: dictating machine

Of what use would a device be that could record voices, but not play them back?

He probably thought there was little interest in a machine to make voice recordings when secretaries were relatively inexpensive.

    Re: dictating machine

The text says that Edison understood the phonograph to be a dictating machine. According to this text, Edison didn't see that the phonograph would be used to record and play music. As to his reasons, I have no idea. It may be that the length of the recording was not very long.
