You're basically right. It's a safari (a holiday where you can watch wild animals, particularly in Africa) but with the emphasis on taking photographs. Of course, most people who go on safari take some photos anyway, but the photo safaris were particularly for keen amateur and professional photographers and raised a lot of money. That meant that the game parks could earn more money without having to rely on hunting which of course, while bringing in money, also disastrously damages the population of the animal.
