    How To Read This

    For:

"He swung his pickax with the flat side at her."

    Should it be read as:

"He swung [[his pickax with the flat side]] at her."

with "his pickax with the flat side" as a single unit,

    or

"He swung his pickax [[with the flat side at her]]."

with "with the flat side at her" as a single unit?

    Re: How To Read This

He swung the flat side of his pickax at her.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

    Re: How To Read This

So, "He swung his pickax with the flat side at her" is not correctly written?

    It's awkward.
