    not sure about following

    the great wall was being built/was built by several chinese dynasties in order to protect the chinese empire from different aggressors.

    Are you trying to describe a completed action in the past? Or an action that was still going on in the past?

    Please observe correct capitalization at the beginning of any sentence and of the personal pronoun I.

    I'd say that only 'was built' works in your sentence. It's true that the building went on for many years, but it's presented in that sentence as a completed event, not an-ongoing one.

    No, you can only use "was being built" in a sentence like "the wall was being built when suddenly an alien spacecraft landed on the site."
