    ideals

    In a country that defines itself by ideals, not by shared blood, who should be allowed to come, work and live here? In the wake of the Sept.11 attacks these questions have never seemed more pressing.
    Could I say from the underlined sentence that the U.S.A claims to be a nation encouraging individual pursuits?

    Are "individual pursuits" and "ideals" the same thing?

    America is a nation founded on a principle, or a set of principles. It is not the nation made up of the people who happened to be living here. People came to this nation because they saw the potential of a new land dedicated to the rule of law, the government by consent of the governed and the protection of individual rights.

    See the 2nd paragraph of the Declaration of Independence:

    We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.
    We don't ask that people who aspire to move to America be of a certain color or religion or ethnicity. We do ask that they understand and agree with these ideas (and similar ones) which form the foundation of the American "creed."
