    can't understand the meaning

"How can talking on the telephone-which from his experience at home he knows is done mainly to order goodies or for fun-or into a machine secure the family's well-being?"

What's "into a machine" mean here?

    Re: can't understand the meaning

The sentence is wrong IMO- I think it should be into a machine (the phone) to secure the family's well-being. To be honest I am not sure what it means about securing well-being.

I also don't understand why it begins "How talking ..."
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

    Re: can't understand the meaning

Sorry for leaving out "can". I've corrected the mistake. I'm still not getting the part about "into a machine".

Even with the extra word (and with spaces round the dashes so they don't look like hyphens), it doesn't make any sense. It would make more sense if "or into a machine" were removed completely!

Putting can in makes secure work without to, but it's still not a very meaningful text- the machine is presumably something else we talk into, but it's really not clear to me what it means.

    Re: can't understand the meaning

A better title would have been Into a machine.
