    As an answer to what?
Please be aware that I'm neither a native English speaker nor a teacher.

Re: for what vs what for

A: I studied English for 6 hours yesterday.
    B:For what? vs What for?

    A:I have bought a gift.
    B:For who? vs Who for?

    A:I read an essay yesterday.
B:About what? vs What about? ,...etc.

The point is that must we put the preposition before 'who-what-which-whom,...etc or must we put the preposition after them? Which ones are in use?

Both options are OK in your examples.

    (AmE)
-For what vs what for. Either is common.
-Like what (OK) vs what like (No).
-For who vs who for. (Either is common but not grammatically correct)
-For whom (OK) vs whom for (No).
-About which/what (OK) vs which about (No),...etc.

    Thanks.
