black pieces & do a five

I can't understand the exact meaning both of black pieces and of do a five in the following conversation:

    Was he your favorite player?

No, John Stallworth was my favorite. But Colquitt was number five, and I had only enough black pieces to do a five. It was pretty good, if I may say so myself. I made a lot of thing out of Legos when I was a kid, but this was my pièce de résistance.

I'd be grateful if anyone'd lend a hand.

Black colored Legos. To make the numeral "5" on the jersey of the football player he was building out of Legos. If he had had more black Legos, he would have made the jersey read "82," which was the number of his favorite player.
