    are they the same

Material culture refers to the touchable, material "things" -physical objects that can be seeen, held, felt, used--that a culture produces. Examining a culture's tools and technology can tell us about the group's history and way of life.
Q: Research into the material culture can _______________.
    A. help us understand the nation's past and present.
    B. demonstrate the nation's civilization

Are both answers the same thing?

    Thanks for your help.

No, they aren't the same. But I can't guess which answer they want.
    A. mentions the culture's past - and the paragraph refers to history.
    B. mentions the nation's civilisation - but there is more to civilisation than "tools and technology"
I'd toss a coin on this one.
