Is "she could recover if she hurt herself" a counterfactual or unlikely conditional in the past or a predictive one in the past? It's a little bit confusing.
I mean if it means : It would have taught her "she can recover if she hurt herself"
or It would have taught her "she could recover if she hurt herself"?

ex)Once there was a little girl who was learning to walk. The trouble was that her mother woudln't let her fall down. Every time she was about to fall down, her mother would rush over and catch her. Her mother thought she was taking care of her daughter when in fact she was keeping her daughter from learning to take care of herself. Letting her fall down would have shown trust in the child, trust that she could get up. It would have taught her that she could recover if she hurt herself....

It is not unlikely that the girl could get up after a fall. By letting the child fall and react to that event, the mother would have been allowing the child to learn that she had the ability to take care of herself. Homework for today - research the word byzantine. Pay particular attention to that part of the definition concerning complex and overly intricate behavior.

Okay, it's a predictive, possible event.
