    Past Perfect Simple

Could someone please help me with the followings?

I'd like to say that there's a guy who used to be a lorry driver, but when I got to know him he was no longer one as he had quit his job four years before and at the time of our meeting he was doing something different. Can I sum all this up by saying:

When I met John, he had not been a lorry driver for years.

Is the Past Perfect negative correct this way?

    Thanks a lot.
