There would have been a problem

"It's maintained a strong presence in several fields even during periods when those fields have been neglected by much of the rest of the profession."

There would be two mistakes. What bothers me is the present perfect tense after "when". I would accept it as in ".............where those fields have been.............". ".....the rest of....." seems to me redundant. Would there need to be ".......by much of the profession....."?

    I agree with your assessment.

Re: There would have been a problem

I could probably use "during times" for a period?

Was "period" singular or plural in that sentence? In your OP, it's singular, but there is no article in front of it (which is clearly a mistake), so I'm not sure.

Re: There would have been a problem

Sorry for the typo! There should be the plural of "period".

"During times" is fine, though I'd use "when" with it.

Re: There would have been a problem

So I would have to change it to "......................when those fields were neglected.........."?
