A wide range of evidence shows that contact with nature enhances children's education, personal and social skills.

What is a subject in this sentence between range and evidence?

If you are forced to pick a single word as the subject, it has to be 'evidence'.

The sentence would make sense without 'A wide range of' but not without 'of evidence'.

I don't agree. I think that the grammatical subject of the verb is 'range'.
