    do less harm ourselves.

I dont think "do less harm ourselves" doesn't mean "do less harming ourselves but "do less harm (to animals) ourselves", where "ourselves" is only an emphasis. What do you think?

64)Scientific laboratories that perform tests on conscious animals in experiments are a perfect example of human cruelty. Animals are incapable of expressing their fear and pain in words, and cannot escape from cages and chains. As a result, we treat animals in ways we would never treat even the most evil animals in the world. We live in an interdependent web of relationships with all species. So, each of us is obliged to become aware of the amount of suffering humankind forces on animals and find ways to do less harm ourselves.

It has nothing to do with harming ourselves. It's talking about each of us finding ways to cause less suffering to animals.
