    "uncharted lands"

"A mile away, a museum model of the Nao Victoria the craft that brought the Portuguese navigator to these uncharted lands in 1520 adorns the waterside."

Does uncharted mean unknown or not recorded on a map?
I think that these uncharted lands in 1520 means that that lands used to be out of reach of human beings as a result we had better select unknown?

    Re: "uncharted lands"

They weren't necessarily out of reach, but they had not yet been mapped. It's possible people had been there before but if they did not make maps or charts of the area while they were there, then they remained "uncharted lands".
