How do I say last last last last time?

All my music teachers have taught that a single whole note is a crotchet. A half-note is a quaver. A double note is a minim. Two minims are a semi-breve. Two semi-breves are a breve.

I like that! The only bit that didn't make sense to me was the crotchet. Firstly, because that is not a quarter note to me (it's a crotchet) and secondly, we don't have quarters in our currency in the UK.

And what's short about a breve (brevis) anyway:-? ;-) People should be told! ;-)

Apart from the 'double whole note' problem - which isn't really a problem as the note is so rare - I find the American system much more sensible. a 3:4 bar has 3 quarter-notes in it, 4:4 has 4 quarter-notes, 6:8 has 6 eighth-notes... Much better;-)
