    after the car started

    Does it sound awakward? Does "have been sleeping" have to be corrected to "slept", a one-time action to match "after"?

    gz130)The kids have been sleeping in the car seats after the car started.

    Yes - or 'went to sleep'.

    In that example I would prefer to use "since" rather than "after".
