    Red face I didn't know + present/pass tense

    Hello all,

I would like to know the difference between "I didn't know + present tense" and "I didn't Know + past tense".

    For example:

Me: Why you are not attending class?

    Peter: I am sick.

Me: Oh, I didn't know you are / were sick. >>>>>>> Which one is correct ? are/were?

    example 2:

Me: I just bought the book for our class.

    Peter: Really? Let me see.

Peter: The edition is not correct

    Me: Oh, I didn't know the edition isn't /wasn't correct >>>>> Which one is correct ? isn't or wasn't ?

    thanks

Only the past tense is standard after 'knew/didn't know'.
