Planning to go / planning on going

Based on what I learnt in school, I would say "I'm planning to go to Paris."

Based on what I've picked up since however I might say "I'm planning on going to Paris."

Is there a difference in meaning or is either better than the other?

I would use the first one, but both are widely heard.
