    studies are underway

I've seen countless "studies" so far, so does it mean a singular study or actually mutiple ones or does it depend? Or is it a generalization?

gu30)Off the coast of Argentina, whales are being attacked by local gulls. Some researchers attribute the attackes to an increasing gull population, and studies are underway to find a solution to this strange problem.

    Re: studies are underway

'Studies' is plural. That suggests to me that it refers to more than one study.
