    personal touch

It used to be that Christmas, with a little help from Blue Peter, was about adding the personal touch. We’d sit there for hours making cards and gifts for family and friends, knowing that the thought put into them would be properly appreciated.

What does "personal touch" mean in this case? Can you paraphrase it in a simpler way?

    not a teacher

Here, "adding the personal touch" is contributing something that you have thought of, written or made yourself, rather than something that was, for example, bought in a shop. Even if you do send somebody a shop-bought card, you might include a handwritten message or small drawing and sign it, just to add a personal touch.
