Can't it be "welcomed"? If not, what is the difference between "welcome" and "welcomed"?

st35)Wood is a material that is widely acknowledged to be environmentally friendly. It has been welcome as an alternative material for a long time in building houses instead of cement of bricks...

I wouldn't use "welcome" or "welcomed" in that context. It would be far better with "used". Also, it's factually incorrect, wood was used as a building material long before cement was even discovered.
