    collected pledges

Please set me clear on the following in red.

Through our 'Running to Grant a Child's Wish' program we were able to make a donation of $211,000 at our 2009 event. Each participant collected pledges from others in the community and/or a few friends for each mile they ran in the Denver Marathon.

Is this saying "each participant got promises from others in the community that they(others) would donate some money per mile they(participants) run"?

    Thank you.
