    primary and secondary school.

I can understand primary school equals elementary school. What about 'secondary school'? I've seen lots of "secondary schools" in Canada. I think similar terms to it are "middle school" and "high school".
Does it depend on countries or regions to use "secondary school" or "middle school(junior high school)" and "high school" combined?

gu144)...Girls' enthusiasm for reading is reflected in their test and exam results, outperforming boys in language subjects at both primary and secondary school.

As you suggested, much depends on the country.
