Hi,

According to Oxford dictionary, the word 'wretched' is pronounced as /retʃɪd/.

But, I have learned that words ending in voiceless consonants should be pronounced with /t/ at the end. And words that end with /d/ or /t/ should be pronounced with /id/ at the end.

Is my rule wrong?

Thanks.

Well, I don't know whether it's right, but it certainly has an exception if it is ;-)

wretched : /retʃɪd/
retched [past simple of 'retch' = vomit] : /retʃt/

I think the rule only applies to the simple past of verbs. But rules aren't my strong point.

Your 'rule' is fine for the second (past) and third (past participle) forms of verbs, but does not necessarily apply to adjectives such as 'naked', 'wicked', 'wretched', 'crooked', etc.
