    more than half

    Hello Teachers and friends,

My friend told me his dance instructor interviewed a young guy who asked for $100 per hour. The dance instructor said, "The young guy had no experience and he was asking for more than half of what I'm getting." I said, "Wow... I didn't know dance instructors can get more than $200 per hour." But my friend said, "No, I said more than half..... which means slightly more than $50." (the amount is just an example.)

What I am confused about is this. If $100 is more than half of X, X is definitely more than $100..... maybe about $200+. I checked with two teachers and both said my friend is correct. I think the teachers are wrong.

    What do you think?

    Re: more than half

This sort of question gets more complicated than it needs to be with 'my friend' and the dance instructor.

    Let's cut out the extras:
Dance Instructor: The young guy had no experience and he was asking for $100, more than half of what I'm getting.

If $100 is more than half what the dance instructor is getting, then the dance instructor must be getting less than $200. S/he might be getting $199.99 or far less - we don't know.

I get you. So if we take out the word 'more', the dance instructor should be getting $200. Am I right?

If you take out "more than", then you are right.

He was asking for $100, half [of] what I'm getting.

Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

I think your teachers should perhaps take up dance instructing...
I'm not a teacher of English, but I have spoken it for (almost) all of my life....
