    Counting words in an essay

How do you count words in an essay?

Is "aren't" counted as a one word?
"A", "the" is counted as a word.

Re: Counting words in an essay

In my experience, contractions (like "aren't") and hyphenated words (like "full-time") count as one word. Articles count.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
