Spacing paragraphs in a formal letter

Once an American native speaker corrected my formal letter and said that in formal letters a new paragraph shouldn't be indented, it's a mistake. We should leave a space between parahraphs instead.

    Is it a general rule?

Does it really make a difference if I leave a space between paragraphs or if a new paragraph is indented?

Re: Spacing paragraphs in a formal letter

Things like this are a matter of style, not grammar.

However, I would never indent a business letter, and I always skip a line between paragraphs.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

Re: Spacing paragraphs in a formal letter

On the rare occasions when I write with a pen between my fingers, I indent. I haven't indented when I have typed a letter for over forty years. I always leave a line between paragraphs.
