In Britain, schools normally have a headteacher and colleges a principal.

In the US, elementary and high schools have principals while colleges and universities have presidents. Headmaster is not a common term in the US.

    No, it does not!

'The headteacher' is a common term for the principals of schools in Britain, as is, simply, 'the head'.

It may come as a surprise to people of certain cultures that roughly one third of British headteachers are female.

In the past, headmaster and headmistress were used for male and female principals respectively.
