It was / is my first time I had visited Japan.

It was / is my first time I had visited Japan.

Which bold word should I use? Thanks.

Re: It was / is my first time I had visited Japan.

As an NES but not a teacher I would have said either:
"It was the first time I had visited Japan." or
"It is the first time I have visited Japan."

    Hope this helps
