Why is it called sales quote?

    Hello,

I have got this excerpt from Wikipedia,

A sales quote is an estimated amount that a person selling something gives to a customer.
There is also a phrase product available for quote.

Do you have any ideas how the primary meaning of the verb quote being to repeat a passage, phrase, etc. evolved into the meaning of the verb estimate?

    Thank you!

    Alex

Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.
