This sentence just doesn't feel right! Is it missing a comma?

Mary was the manager in what was the town's best bar.

Would these be better?

(1) Mary was the manager in, what was the town's best bar.

(2) Mary was the manager in, what was, the town's best bar.

(3) Mary was the manager in (what was) the town's best bar.

You don't need commas in this sentence.

No and no; in fact all your alternatives are simply wrong.

Thanks!

Maybe I have a comma obsession. In your response above I would have written

"in fact, all your alternatives are simply wrong"

With "In fact", the comma is optional.
