    a number of + plural noun + plural verb
    the number of + plural noun + singular verb
    Ex:
    A number of stundents are going to the class picnic
    The number of days in the week is seven

    Yes, csharp is right. I usually just remember that "A number of" = many

    a number of = determiner

    it is like 'many people have'
