    Synthesis of sentence

Only Paul paid attention to the instructor. No one else paid attention to the instructor.
    a) Nobody except Paul paid attention to the instructor.
    b) Everybody except Paul did not pay attention to the instructor.

Is sentence (a) or (b) correct when the sentences in bold are synthesised? Thanks.

    Re: Synthesis of sentence

B is grammatical and logically correct but horribly awkward and unnatural.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
