Student or Learner
Please make the following in red clear for me.
Years ago, I received a cable from Cuba that astonished me. It read: "Unless you cable me to the contrary, I am coming to New York to take training to make a speech." It was signed: "Mario Lazo." Who was he? I wondered!
Is this saying "unless you cable me that you can't accept me as a student"?
cable me = send me a telegram
....to the contrary = that says 'Don't come'
But I don't understand the context. It's not usual to 'take training to make a speech', unless it's training about giving a particular speech - and in that case 'accept me as a student' seems inappropriate.
