When I was young the [STRIKE]stupid[/STRIKE] English [STRIKE]Mr[/STRIKE] master [STRIKE]was[/STRIKE] told me that we only use auxiliary verbs after Wh question [STRIKE]-_- [/STRIKE] so it is locked in my brain [STRIKE]at[/STRIKE] this way.

Thanks in advance.

I would use "What's the time?" more frequently but you will hear "What time is it?" just as often. There is no difference between them provided the speaker wants to know what the time is right now (at the time of asking).

"What time is it?" can be used in other situation. For example:

John: Don't forget we're going to the theatre on Friday evening.
Sarah: Oh yes! Remind me - what time is it?

In the dialogue above, "What time is it?" means "What time does the theatre performance start on Friday evening?"
