[Grammar] opposite vs in front of

What is the difference between these sentences?

He is standing in front of the bank.
He is standing opposite to the bank.

As an NES but not a teacher, I would read the first sentence as meaning he was directly in front of the bank and the second that he was on the opposite side of the road from the bank.
