    present perfect??

Is the second sentence also correct? Why/ not?

    1. We planted a tree in the garden. Unfortunately, it died.
    2. We have planted a tree in the garden. Unfortunately, it died.

    Thank you.

    Re: present perfect??

The present perfect has some relevance to the time of speaking. If the tree is now dead, the fact of its having been planted is relevant only to the past. Only #1 is natural.
