    "A" word, A-word, "A"-word

Right now, we're having a national debate about legalising abortion in certain circumstances.

There is a reluctance by some people to refer to "abortion" when discussing the detail of the proposals.

Which of the following would be best, and why

    (a) There is a reluctance to refer to the "A" word.
    (b) There is a reluctance to refer to the "a" word.
    (c) There is a reluctance to refer to the A-word.
    (d) There is a reluctance to refer to the a-word.
    (e) There is a reluctance to refer to the "A"-word.
    (f) There is a reluctance to refer to the "a"-word.

    I'd go for (c).

Me too, on the analogy of 'C-word', 'F-word', and 'N-word'.

Jaggers, instead of sending your thanks in a separate message, just click the Like button please.

The reason is that it is flagged as a new post, so we think you might have a follow-up question or something to add. Those of us with slow connections and/or old computers have to waste valuable time waiting for it to appear.

    Thank you.
